There are many reasons I like to cruise and our recent Alaskan cruise just added a few more to the list.
Because of the route, sailing through the heart of nature from British Columbia to Alaska and back, there were ample moments to just soak it all in and also sink into a little nature healing. A little nature healing always puts things in perspective for me.
The Transformation Part
Chief among all my reasons to cruise is the transformational click I always feel as I gaze out over the water, sometimes calming, sometimes energizing (you never know what you’re going to get), and just…
This transformational click can take many forms and mean many things. I’ve learned to listen for the sound of it. This time around it involved a sharpening of purpose and goals and a way forward…but I’ll get to that in a moment.
The Role of the Camera
The use of photography is part of how I speak and process experience.
I have often wondered if I am missing out on being present by having a camera stuck to my face a lot of the time. Am I removing myself from the situation by creating a barrier between me and the experience?
I’ve thought about this a lot and don’t believe that is so. One of the things that I do first is just breathe the scene in. I put myself in the moment and feel the experience down to my toes. And then I pick up the camera…to try the best I can to tell a story.
I Believe Photography…
I believe photography sifts the layers and can get to the underneath of things.
I believe photography and other art forms actually help you look closely at things and deepen the experience.
I believe photography is another way of telling a story.
I believe photography sharpens my perception of a situation. And it helps me digest and translate experiences into my own language, which in turn I share with others.
This recent experience on the cruise has only made me more resolved to pursue this art form.
And Then there is Digital Art…
And then, of course, I want to take things one step more (I’m sure I will often take things one step too far!) by using my photos and my artwork to create completely new amalgamated pieces by working with digital art.
That is the part about ‘sharpening of goals, purpose, and a way forward’ that I was talking about earlier. Working with digital art and moving forward with that is only one thing that became clear to me on this trip, but at the moment, I can only deal with one thing at a time! I’ve got a list!
Making art is a form of magic and I haven’t been doing enough of that lately. And you all know that I believe in magic. It’s right up there just below my name.
I hope to show you some of my digital art here in a few months.
I see it as another way of composing and telling a story…of telling my story.
And the world needs more stories…
How do you tell your story?
